What is Parkour? Ultimate Parkour Challenge

(Ultimate Parkour Challenge Bonus Clip – What is Parkour?) This clip is from MTV’s Ultimate Parkour Challenge where they asked contestants “What is Parkour”? Now parkour is easy to get mixed up with freerunning and many descriptions (including the one in text in this bonus clip) have done just that. Freerunning is the fastest way to get from point A to point B on foot, regardless of obstacles. Parkour is an athletic art form that requires discipline and training (even if that training is self taught). Parkour is the art of movement and the way that movement is incorporated with obstacles. In essence, if MTV’s series was called Ultimate Free Running Challenge it would be a race from one spot to another. As the Ultimate Parkour Challenge, it becomes an artistic expression of one’s movement style using one’s surroundings. So that brings us back to this MTV Ultimate Parkour Challenge bonus clip – What is Parkour?

David Belle Parkour Philosophy

This is a video titled “David Belle – I Jump From Rooftop to Rooftop” that has David talking about parkour and sharing his parkour philosophy. Here’s a sample of what he says:

“Parkour is a method of training which allows us to overcome obstacles, both in the urban and natural environments. It’s a weapon in disguise. We train… and when one day we encounter a problem, we know that we are able to use it. It can be the art of flight, of the chase, of helping someone with a problem, something ordinary…”

“I believe that the end result of Parkour is to become entirely autonomous in life.”

Amir Ouazzani’s Parkour Philosophy

In this documentary-style mini-video Amir Ouazzani of Ground Zero talks about his philosophy behind Parkour and how it helped him fit into a society where he didn’t fit before. His history was a start in gymnastics before discovering parkour, which for him is now the passion of his life. He likes to go into an area, do some parkour moves, and “leave everyone speechless”. Here is Amir with his parkour philosophy…

BBC Documentary – Parkour Runners vs. Car

It’s a race. In this short documentary, two professional Parkour runners race a Peugeot 207 in a six mile race (for the car at least) to see who can get to the Liver Building first. It’s an interesting video to watch but seems too much over the top – like an infomercial for the car that felt it had to be interesting at the same time, thus the race. And they’re off…
